Superintendent Issues Critical Health Advisory on Norovirus
Dr. Gerald Fitzhugh, II, Superintendent of Schools, Has Issued An Important Health Advisory:
Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that causes gastroenteritis. The advisory aims to inform parents, guardians, and caregivers about symptoms, prevention strategies, and appropriate actions to ensure the health and safety of students, staff, and the broader community.
Norovirus, often referred to as the "stomach flu" (though unrelated to influenza), spreads easily through contaminated food, surfaces, and person-to-person contact. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps, with most cases lasting 1–2 days. While recovery typically occurs without medical attention, severe symptoms such as bloody diarrhea or high fever warrant immediate medical consultation.
To limit the spread of Norovirus:
- Wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water.
- Use bleach-based cleaners for disinfecting surfaces.
- Monitor children and staff displaying symptoms.
- Seek medical advice when needed.
