In preparation for this phenomenal event, we spoke with Mr. Barry Devone, Community Engagement Officer, about why parents should plan to attend this year’s District Parent Conference. He shared more details about what parents planning to attend the conference can expect.
Q: Tell us about this year’s conference theme, "Parent Pride." How did you come up with it, and what does it mean?
The theme "Parent Pride" was inspired by our desire to celebrate the essential role that parents and guardians play in their children's education and personal development. We wanted to create an environment that acknowledges and uplifts the contributions of parents, recognizing them as crucial partners in the educational journey.
"Parent Pride" is about honoring the commitment, love, and strength that parents bring as they support their children’s academic, emotional, and social growth. We believe that when parents feel proud and connected, it empowers them to engage even more deeply in their child’s learning experience, which ultimately benefits the entire school community.
Q: Could you share any feedback or success stories from parents who attended? How has it helped them better support their children’s education?
Parents have shared overwhelmingly positive feedback from past conferences. One of the most appreciated workshops was a parent-led session focused on connecting families to local community resources and activities for children. This session equipped parents with practical tools to support their children outside the classroom by making them aware of local programs and support networks.
Another standout session was led by social workers from Orange High School, focusing on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Parents found this workshop particularly eye-opening, as it highlighted the impact of early trauma on children’s development and provided strategies for fostering resilience at home. Many parents expressed that these workshops have strengthened their ability to support their children’s well-being and academic progress.
Q: Are there any new workshops or speakers this year that you’re particularly excited about or think will resonate with attendees?
This year’s lineup of workshops is thoughtfully curated to support families on multiple levels. We’re especially excited to bring back the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) workshop due to the positive feedback it received last year. The facilitators are highly skilled in helping parents understand how childhood stress and trauma can impact learning, and they provide practical strategies for creating a supportive home environment.
Every workshop offered this year aligns with the "Parent Pride" theme, helping families feel more connected and empowered in their roles.
