Five Days at sea offer students hands-on naval experience and lifelong friendships during Fleet Week 2024.

ORANGE, NJ — Eighteen Orange High School Naval Junior Reserve Officer Cadets (NJROTC) cadets were selected and spent five days onboard the USS Bataan (LHD-5), a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship in the United States Navy.

The cadets embarked on a unique journey, arriving by train in Norfolk, VA, and then setting sail on the USS Bataan. They had the experience of a lifetime as the ship got underway from Norfolk and traveled to New York City for Fleet Week 2024.

The cadets were given every opportunity to experience life at sea, including eating daily meals with the crew, exploring different jobs and equipment, and watching aircraft take off and land for at-sea exercises.

“It was a thrilling experience, and I learned how to walk on Navy ships and what daily life is like for sailors and Marines,” said Cadet Senior Chief Petty Officer Gregory Clossaint. “I also loved the breakfast.”

One of the trip's highlights was meeting other NJROTC cadets from local schools, building relationships, and sharing ideas and experiences.

“I learned how other NJROTC units operate and how they are disciplined like us,” said Cadet Seaman Renard Morrison. “I met friends I will have for a lifetime, and even one I am joining the Marines with from Passaic High School NJROTC.”

The trip concluded with the cadets “manning the rails,” a tradition that renders salutes and honors as the ship enters port.
