Forty-six graduating Orange High School seniors attained the NJ State Seal of Biliteracy for the 2019-2020 academic year. These students demonstrated proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing Spanish and French, in addition to English. They have met the following New Jersey Department of Education criteria:

1. Demonstrated proficiency in English by meeting English language arts graduation requirements or attained the appropriate cut score on the ACCESS for ELLs assessment (for English Language Learners); and
2. Demonstrated a linguistic proficiency level of at least Intermediate Mid according to the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages Proficiency Guidelines, or demonstrated a level deemed equivalent to Intermediate Mid for languages such as American Sign Language or Native American languages.

The Seal of Biliteracy, an initiative started in California to acknowledge and award hardworking bilingual and multilingual students, was implemented in New Jersey in 2016. Orange has participated for the past three years with increased involvement. In 2017-2018, 6 students received certification, and in 2018 - 2019, 13 students were awarded the State Seal of Biliteracy. 

Along with fostering the study of world languages in schools, and honoring the multiple cultures and languages in the Orange community, the State Seal of Biliteracy provides universities with a method of awarding academic credit to certified students and nationally accredited proof of a level of bilingual skill to potential employers.
