Week of September 14th, 2020

  • Welcome to the second week of school!

    Here is what we will be working on this week:

    • In Language Arts we will be exploring different comprehension strategies with the focus of how making new friends and learning new things helps us. 
    • In Phonics we will be discusing short a and building words with that sound. 
    • In Math we will be starting Module 1.  The beginning of this module focuses on finding a group in a larger number and showing your thinking with number bonds.
    • In Science we will be starting our exploration of air.
    • In Social Studies we will start learning about the rights and responsibilities of a citizen.

Week of September 21st, 2020

  • Welcome to the third week of school!

    Here is what we will be working on this week:

    • In Language Arts we will be practicing retelling the beginning, middle, and end of the story, asking and answering questions, and finding the author's purpose. 
    • In Phonics we will continue to discuss the short a sound and building words with that sound. 
    • In Math we will be continuing Module 1.  We will be working on finding parts in a larger number and showing your thinking with number bonds.
    • In Science we will continue our exploration of air.
    • In Social Studies we will continue learning about the rights and responsibilities of a citizen.

  • Welcome to the fourth week of school!

    Here is what we will be working on this week:

    • In Language Arts we will be practicing asking and answering questions, describing characters and reasons for their actions, and finding the author's purpose. 
    • In Phonics we will start to discuss the short i sound and building words with that sound. 
    • In Math we will be continuing Module 1.  We will be working on drawing pictures to represent the information in story problems and finding the missing number in an addition equation.
    • In Science we will continue our exploration of air.
    • In Social Studies we will continue learning about the rights and responsibilities of a citizen.

    New this week: 

    • We are going to start using Google Classroom during our live morning sessions to access links and libraries.  Please leave the classroom open after accesing the google meet link each morning so your child can easily go back there for activities. Thank you! 
    • We also started using Whiteboard.chat for math last week.  We will continue to explore this new website this week to help students become more independent while working on their math problems.

    • In Math we will be continuing Module 1.  We will be working on equal expressions and reviewing different ways to add numbers.

  • Welcome to the sixth week of school!

    Here is what we will be working on this week:

    • In Language Arts we will be reading Fiction books and focusing on elements of a fiction text.  Students will be working on responding to text dependent questions (both orally and in written form).
    • In Phonics we will start to discuss the short o sound and building words with with that sound.

  • Welcome to the seventh week of school!

    Here is what we will be working on this week:

    • In Language Arts we will be reading different books to help us understand our unit theme "Communities are Important".  Students will start working on their benchmark assessment and will continue writing into next week.
    • In Phonics we will start to discuss the short u sound and building words with with that sound. 
    • In Math we will be continuing Module 1.  We will be working onsolving story problems and relating addition to subtraction.
    • In Science we will bestarting our exploration of weather.
    • In Social Studies we will be learning about maps, continent, and oceans.

Week of November 16th, 2020

  • Welcome to the eleventh week of school!

    Here is what we will be working on this week:

    • In Language Arts students will be working on their performance task for this unit.  Students will pick a character from a book we have read in class and explain how that character is being a good citizen.  Students will write an explanatory writing piece with a topic sentence, details from the text and a concluding sentence.
    • In Phonics we will starting digraphs.  We will be working on the "sh" digraph this week.
    • In Math we will be starting Module 2.  We will be working on adding three addends by using the strategy making ten.  
    • In Science we will continuing our exploring of the moon and finishing the unit.
    • In Social Studies we will be continuing chapter 3 and focusing on American Symbols.

    • In Language Arts students will be looking at a fantasy book.  We will be answering text dependent questions in class discussions and in our writing.  We will also be working through the writing process and publishing a writing piece by Friday.
    • In Phonics we will reviewing digraphs.  
    • In Math we will be continuing Module 2.  We will be working on subtracting 8 from a 2 digit number using different strategies.  
    • In Science we will be continuing our exploration on wind.  We will be discussing items like kits and pinwheels and how we can use them to better understand wind.
    • In Social Studies we will be finishing chapter 3 this week.  We will be learning about national holiday and taking an end of unit assessment.

    • In Language Arts students will be writing New Year's resolutions. We will also be answering text dependent questions in class discussions and in our writing based on informational texts.  
    • In Phonics we will starting long vowels with magic e at the end.  Our focus this week will be on long a.  
    • In Math we will be starting Module 3.  This Module is about measurement.  We will be focusing on using nonstandard measurement to measure objects.  We will aslo be working on starting at the endpoints and measuring without gaps or overlaping items. 
    • In Science we will be starting our second unit of study on "Light and Sound".

Week of January 25th, 2021

  • Welcome to the twentieth week of school!

    Here is what we will be working on this week:

    • In Language Arts students will be readinga fantasy text and practicing writing about story structure - with emphasis on the problem, the events leading to the solution, and the solution.
    • In Phonics we will be focusing on inflected "-ed" endings.  
    • In Math we will continuing Module 4.  For most of the week, we will be focused on findign the tens and the ones in a two digit number.  By the end of the week, we will be using this information to help us compare numbers.
    • In Science we will be continuing our second unit of study on "Light and Sound".  This week we will be focusing on sound volume.
    • In Social Studies we will be starting Chapter 5.  CHapter 5 discusses different cultures.

Week of February 1st, 2021

  • Welcome to the twenty-first week of school!

    This is also the beginning of Black History Month! 

    Here is what we will be working on this week:

    • In Language Arts students will be working on our third performance task.  Students will be answering the focus question: What do plants need to grow and survive?  We will be using the text "The Curious Garden" as our text evidence for this assessment.
    • In Phonics we will be focusing on long i with a magic e and long o with a magic e. 
    • In Math we will continuing Module 4.  This week we will be cofusing on comparing two digit numbers.
    • In Science we will be continuing our second unit of study on "Light and Sound".  This week we will be focusing on sound pitch.
    • In Social Studies we will be taking a break from chapter 5 to focus on Black History Month.  This week we will be explaining what Black History is and we will be learning about two important figures in black history.  Students will also start discussing their research project that will be assigned on Monday February 8th and due February 12th.  Students will be asked to pick one person in black history to research and complete a graphic orgnaizer about that person.  More directions will be given soon for this project!!

    For Black History Month, our class will be doing a research project!  By Febraury 8th, your child needs to choose a person to research, use the links provided to discover why that person is important, and fill out a graphic organizer about their chosen person.  All resources can be found on our google classroom.

    Here is what we will be working on this week:

    • In Language Arts students will be working on reading information texts about inventors.  Students will be looking for the central idea and supporting details in the text.
    • In Phonics we will be focusing on contractions this week. 
    • In Math we will continuing Module 4.  This week we will be focusing on adding and subtracting groups of tens.
    • In Science we will be continuing our second unit of study on "Light and Sound".  This week we will be focusing on how sound travels.  Students will also be completing a mid-year assessment.
    • In Social Studies we will be taking a break from chapter 5 to focus on Black History Month.  This week we will be focusing on important leaders like Martin Luther King Jr, Kamala Harris and Barack Obama.

    • In Language Arts students will be working finding the setting and how it changes in fiction books.  We will also be working on making inferences using our background knowledge and clues from the text.
    • In Phonics we will be focusing on the short /oo/ sound this week found in words like foot, shook, and took. 
    • In Math we will continuing Module 4.  This week we will be focusing on adding and subtracting groups of tens.
    • In Science we will be continuing our second unit of study on "Light and Sound".  This week we will be focusing on how sound travels.  
    • In Social Studies we will be taking a break from chapter 5 to focus on Black History Month.  This week we will be focusing on putting the information from the research projects into paragraphs and making a poster to share with the class by Friday.

    • In Phonics we will be focusing on the slong /oo/ sound this week.  This sound can be represented with different vowel patterns; such as ew, u and ue. 
    • In Math we will continuing Module 4.  This week we will be focusing on story problems and tens & ones.
    • In Science we will be continuing our second unit of study on "Light and Sound".  This week we will be focusing on how sound travels.  
    • In Social Studies we will be continuing chapter 5 and discussing American Indians, Immigrants and stories in our culture this week.

  • Welcome to the twenty-sixth week of school!

    Here is what we will be working on this week:

    • In Language Arts we will be reading a fantasy book called "Red Knit Cap Girl and the Reading Tree".  The class will discuss what we can learn from the book to help us in our own lives.  The students will also be exploring folktales and fairytales in their reading logs on google classroom.
    • In Phonics we will be focusing on the long i with vowel patterns y, ie and igh.  
    • In Math we will be reviewing and taking a test on Module 4.  We will also be starting Module 5 this week.  In Module 5 we will be exploring 2-D and 3-D closed shapes.
    • In Science we will continue exploring light and shadows.

Week of March 22nd, 2021

  • Welcome to the twenty-seventh week of school!

    Here is what we will be working on this week:

    • In Language Arts we will be reading a biography book called "My Name is Gabriela".  The class will discuss the point of view of the story - who is telling the story.  The students will also be exploring point of view in their reading logs on google classroom as they read Fiction books on Epic.
    • In Phonics we will be starting r-controlled vowels.  This week we will be focusing on "ar".  Students will be asked to identify the r-controlled vowel in words, read words with this spelling pattern, and write words with this pattern both during our live class sessions and during asynchrounous learning via google classroom. 
    • In Math we will be continuing Module 5.  So far in Module 5 we have explored 2-D and 3-D shapes.  This week we will be focused on making shapes with shapes.   For example, using triangles to create a trapeziod. 
    • In Science we will be finishing our  exploration on light.  The students will be assessed on what they learned in this part of the unit.  
    • In Social Studies we will be continuing a mini unit on Women's History.  This week we will be learning about Serena Williams, Sally Ride, and Helen Keller.

Week of May 10th, 2021

  • Welcome to the thirty-third week of school!

    Here is what we will be working on this week:

    • In Language Arts we will be continueing our unit on Earth and nature.  We will be reading a realistic fiction book called "Blackout" and discussing inferences we can make based on clues from the text and our prior knowledge.
    • In Phonics we will be working on making nouns and action verbs plural with "s" and "es".  Students will learn the rule for adding "es" instead of just "s" to a word.
    • In Math we will be starting Module 6.  This unit will be focusing on place value.  In lessons 1 and 2 students will be practicing comparing information using tape diagrams.  In lessons 3 and 4, students will be counting by groups of tens and ones.
    • In Science we will continue our unit on Plants and Animals.  This week we will focus on grain - we will conduct an experiment to grow wheat in a straw and we will be learning about how grain is used for both animals and humans.  *** Please continue to water the sunflower plant we planted last week!
    • In Social Studies we will be finishing chapter 6 which discussed earning, spending, and saving money.

Week of June 1st, 2021

  • Welcome to the thirty-sixth week of school!

    Happy Memorial Day! I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend!

    Here is what we will be working on this week:

    • In Language Arts we will be publishing our Module 4 Benchmark writing pieces and having our publishing party on Tuesday.  Then we will be reading opinion books where we will be focused on what the author is trying to persuade us to do.
    • In Phonics we will be reviewing syllables.
    • In Math we will be continuing Module 6.  This week we will be learning many different strategies to add 2-digit numbers.
    • In Science we will continue our unit on Plants and Animals.  This week we will be learning about potatoes and exploring at plant and animal habbitats.
    • In Social Studies we will be continuing our mini unit on Digital Citizenship.
