    Dragonwings

    Dragonwings is a novel for young readers about Moon Shadow Lee, a Chinese boy who immigrated to America in 1903.

    Moon Shadow leaves behind his mother in China to live with his father, Windrider, in San Francisco, where they work for the family business, a laundromat. Windrider and Moon Shadow move to Oakland to build an airplane, called Dragonwings, together. There Moon Shadow befriends a girl named Robin and her aunt, Miss Whitlaw. Windrider takes flight in Dragonwings but crashes. He decides to focus on his family rather than flying, and he and Moon Shadow bring Moon Shadow’s mother to America.

     

    What we have read:

    Holes

    The 2003 movie Holes, based on the book written by Louis Sachar, follows 14-year-old Stanley Yelnats's experience with the juvenile justice system. Stanley is wrongfully accused of stealing from a homeless shelter because he cannot afford decent legal representation. Stanley is sentenced to Camp Green Lake.

     

    The Golden Goblet

    In Eloise Jarvis McGraw's "The Golden Goblet," Ranofer, a young boy orphaned and in the care of his abusive half-brother Gebu, dreams of becoming a master goldsmith like his father, but struggles to fulfill his destiny due to Gebu's cruelty. 

     

    The Hobbitt

    A well mannered Hobbit named Bilbo Baggins, embarks upon a journey to take back a kingdom, and a very important jewel ,with twelve dwarves, and a wizard named Gandalf the Grey. Halfway throughout the journey, Bilbo embarks upon a magic golden ring, which he stole, or earned from Gollum.

     

    A Long Walk to Water

    "A Long Walk to Water" follows two intertwined stories: Salva, a boy fleeing war-torn Sudan in 1985, and Nya, a Sudanese girl in 2008 facing a daily struggle to fetch water, whose story connects with Salva's journey in a hopeful and moving way.
