Students will be responsible for pausing the video at certain times to discuss with parents certain word meanings for text clarification.
      • Questions to discuss orally (no written response necessary) with your child at the end of the section

        • Are all people the same?  Are all trees? How are they different?
      • complete the following activity
        • Example will be posted.
        • As students reread Are Trees Alive? on Days 2 through 5, they will add details to their forearm-and-hand tree to represent the information learned that day about trees.  Students will draw in the parts of the tree dependent on what is read in the text.

      • writing assignment
        • Grades 1 & 2 complete 2 sheets of consonant pairs phonics: will be scanned
        • Kindergarten - learning to spell worksheets

    Science

Watch the BrainPop video to inform students about Corona Virus - to give more reference for why we have school at home now https://www.brainpop.com/health/diseasesinjuriesandconditions/coronavirus/

Then complete this fun experiment - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ho0o7H6dXSU

    • All that is needed is water, soap, and black pepper.
    • Place a lot of black pepper in a bowl of water.  Explain to students that the black pepper is like the virus.  When we touch something, the virus can get on our hands. Have student dip a finger in the bowl of black pepper water.  See that the black pepper (virus) is on your hand. In order to make sure the virus gets off our hands, we need to use soap.
    • Have student dip their finger in a little soap.  Then place the soap finger in the pepper water. Watch what happens!
    • Explain to your child that soap can make the virus get away from us.  Washing our hands is very important.

    Science

    • Watch the instructional video.  In this video, Ms. Kabrel will be discussing -
      •  (What did you notice about the beam of light?  When you pointed the light close to the table, what did it look like "small circle of light", When you moved the light higher from the table, what did it look like " the circle of light got bigger", etc).
      • Tell students that light can come from  natural sources such as the Sun or fire or from sources such as lamps and lightbulbs.  Ask students to identify some sources of light.
      • Ms. Kabrel introduces a flashlight, and all the parts of the flashlight (bulb, switch, batteries to provide energy to power the light).
      • Review how to appropriately use the flashlight and demonstrate.
      • Ask students to find a flashlight in their homes and interact with flash light for a 3-5 minutes,
      • Ms. Kabrel introduces the exploration and asks students what will happen if they shine the light on their hand (start with it close and then slowly move it away so that a shadow is produced).  Students can then replicate the demonstration.
      • Questions to discuss with parents
      • Introduce the term "shadow" - tells students they made a shadow with their hands.  Now we are going to use other objects.
      • Ms. Kabrel will introduce the objects and prepare students that they are to predict the shape of the shadow before they shine the light.
      • Students can then work with materials around their homes and explore the shadows.
      • Parents can work with their child to have a sense-making discussion (which objects made shadows, how were they different etc).  Ask students to summarize the lesson orally by answering the question "How do you make shadows? (you need a light source and an object to block the light).
      • Ms. Kabrel will draw a model to show how an object blocks the light to make a shadow.
      • Students then submit an answer to the focus question "What makes a shadow?" on Class Dojo.

    • Science  - Review with your child what makes a shadow?  What two things do we need to make a shadow? Tell your child that the sun can also make shadows outside!
      • Challenge 1:  a wide shadow
      • Challenge 2:  a narrow shadow.
      • Challenge 3: a shadow on the ground and on a wall at the same time
      • Challenge 4: an interesting shadow
      • It is your choice if you feel comfortable bringing your child outside to the front steps, backyard, a walk around the block.  The goal here is for students to see the sun making natural shadows in the world around them. If you are more comfortable having your child look through a window, that can also work just fine.
      • This is a type of scavenger hunt.  I am going to list several types of shadows I want you to find, and you can draw a picture of where you saw this shadow outside.
      • Lastly, I want you to send me a video of you making a shadow do something fun!  Maybe your shadow hides and then appears, or has four arms, or is shaking hands with someone, or is jumping.  Think of something fun and send me a video that shows you know how to make shadows.

        • Summer: green leaves and ripe fruit
        • Autumn: Orange and yellow leaves on the branches and on the ground below

    • Make shadow art
      • This can be done using a spray bottle with a little bit of paint and water.
      • Directions: A child lays their hand on a piece of paper, with fingers spread wide, and you spray paint on to it.
      •  Tell them this is like sunshine shining on their hand – the light rays will spread outward and continue till they run into something that blocks them (such as their hand), and that makes a shadow. When they lift their hands off, a shadow is left behind.
      • Here’s a poster to explain the idea… The poster also includes photos of several ancient cave paintings of paint shadow hands, including some from Indonesia believed to be 40,000 years old.  People have been making shadow art for a very long time!
