New Comers' Academy (NCA Grades 4/5, NCA Grades 6/7, NCA I, & NCA II)
The New Comers Academy is a unique program that enables Port of Entry and Beginner Level students to receive intensive ESL instruction. The goal of this program is to provide our students with intense English instruction so that they actively participate in their content area classes and their specials without feeling limited, while strengthening the students’ receptive and expressive language. Students are in self-contained classrooms and receive instructions by grade bands of 4/5 and 6/7 at Rosa Parks and Lincoln. Newcomer students from other district schools attend the program at the school closest to them. There is no transportation provided by the district. Students receive instructions from the teachers in ELA, Math, Social Studies, and Science. After week 18 in the program, students will join mainstream classrooms. They will be immersed in their academic instruction in English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Students will take part in the following special activity classes: physical education, health, Music, Art, Computers, culinary, and technology. They will not need World Languages.
New Comers' Academy is available to students in grades 4-7 at Lincoln Avenue Elementary School and Rosa Parks Community School; to students in grades 8 - 9 at Orange Preparatory Academy (OPA); and to students in grades 10 - 12 at Orange High School.
Sheltered English Instruction
Teachers in Orange Public School are trained in Sheltered Instruction. SI is a means for making grade-level academic content (e.g., science, social studies, math) more accessible for English language learners while at the same time promoting their English language development NJAC 6A:15-1.4a/f. It is an approach that can extend the time students have for getting language support services while giving them a jump start on the content subjects they need for graduation
